Convertibles...
Tag: Off Topic DiscussionI have to decide by noon whether I'm gonna buy this car - this is my only sticking point with it - How the top fairs without being garaged.
I should say - it's an old car - 89 Le Baron (belongs to my mutha) and it's been garaged for 15 years...only 58K miles on it - I know its been well-maintained and it's in cream puff condition - including the top.
Is there anything that can be used on the top to keep in good condition?...and I'm thinking I could get a car cover for it too.
I should add - I'm in the NE so - it will be out in the winter months too.....naturally
I don't have one but...
Aren't those tops made of canvas or similar fabric with an outer layer of vinyl or similar? You can get vinyl conditioner with UV blocker--it's the UV in sunlight that makes that sort of stuff deteriorate more than anything else. And (as you mentioned) a car cover would go a long way. But at any rate, if this will be your main car, it's going to be outside a lot anyway: while you're driving of course, and also in the parking lot wherever it is you go. You might do a google search for things like "convertible car care" or "care for convertible car tops".
Off-topic: I like your av.

Off-topic: I like your av. I realize now it's kinda of dumb question - but I guess I'm anxious about it. I found out there is convertible top conditioner. This car is for my daughter - that'll make four cars in my yard and we have no garage.
and thanks! - I like my av too

I should add - I'm in the NE so - it will be out in the winter months too.....naturally I've always had convertibles until recently. If they top is white - you shouldn't worry about fadding (with black you should use a conditioner as the peron above me suggested). The only problem with a white top is tar and sap from trees. Simple tar remover will get rid of this problem. I never had any of my cars in a garage and have never had any problems (I'm form NC - so I have weathered snow and horrid heat). Just don't leave the top down in the sun - it will kill your seats and dash. Never let a frog jump in the hole under the top while it's down either.
The top is black...and we have alot trees - defintely gonna need a cover.
I'm kinda excited - even if the car is for my kid - I've always wanted a convertible...and it's summer!
it should be okay if you get some conditioner.
Be careful though, you could get hail damage if you get any extreme storms in your area.
I have one and when we did not have a garage to put it in we definately had a cover. Especially when we had it redone. Also affected our choice of house (had to have a garage for princess).
We had to park our car (a soft-top Miata) in a lot with no cover for 4 years till we got a covered space - the top didn't suffer any ill effects, but then the weather here isn't extreme (rarely snows, not too hot in summer). We always left the top up because of birds.
When you wash the car, you can't soap the soft window or it will go cloudy, I know that much.
Enjoy, rickielee, you'll love it.

Enjoy, rickielee, you'll love it. I have the same car with no garage (southern Cali) and don't have any trouble maintaining the top, the window however is trashed but I unzip it and leave it down all the time anyway. Enjoy your new car, I LOVE my convertible!
