Hot Discussion: District 9 (Peter Jackson, Neil Blomkamp)

There has been much rumor as to a Halo movie being made, however, Peter Jackson mentioned back in 2007, that it is most likely dead, or on a several year hold. He has however, begun production of a new sci-fi thriller, known as District 9. He is working with a prominant South African born director called Neil Blomkamp.

Blomkamp is known for his short halo movies (I'm sure all of you have seen these on You tube). He has also done comercials for Adidas ("Yellow:), Snickers I beileve as well. He has also done several short films which are getting an enormous amount of attention from film critics such as myself. Some of these films include: Tetra Vaal, Tempbot, and his by far, his most popular: Alive in Joburg. A.I.J. is a short (summary as some of us decifer it) of his new film District 9. It is about alien 'slaves' who have 'escaped' their home planet or wherever they were before, in their ships, and land in 1991, in S. Affrica. They seek aid from the S. African gov't, only to be treated as illegla alliens, outcasts and sub-rational, creatures. This is because their morals and ways of life are different than ours, and because they came in illegally and began steeling electricity, water, etc, They are not trusted by the gov't and are warned to stay in their 'non-human' zones and out of restricted areas (which are either gov't properties or human-zones).

They rape, kill, steal. They are basically an oppresed species, who came to S. Africa (of all places) seeking aid. However, Africa is poor in the area they arrived and the gov't has its own problems to worry about already, making the earth 'experience' for these aliens miserable. They cannot fight our bacterica, they are treated as things instead of rational beings. They aren't trusted. They are somewhat forced to steal and do what that do b/c their oppressed, however, the gov't does not trust their morals and their ideas of hidden consequentialism (in this case, do bad things to achieve beneficial and good ends for themselves (the aliens).

The film is very sketchy on what the major theme is, and this 'trailer' is more of a short movie than anything. So far, Jackson and Blomkamp have done a considerable job at covering up the plot, cast and all the inbetween. I understand their is a host of websites dedicated to a 'viral-campaign' (I belive to be regarding the movie) Though the links to websites related to the campaign appear to be real websites and businesses, who's business experties remain hidden. They talk about furthereing human life, etc....not in the sense of alternate fuels, or banks, or stuff, they just remain unclear. Note: human and non human are used in reference in the movie. I am not sure why they just say alien, but it adds to the mystique. Furthermore, this campaign has an intresting website...a game or map or something. I am still figuring this all out, people can't seem to crack the codes (especially when they take the side of the humans on the weird 'game') and figure out what is going on with the sites and the movie. There is an 'alien' language, not yet audio, but a written alphabet/translator are provided for those who take the alien side.

Last point, there seems to be almost like a second Declaration of Independance written for the non-humans living in district 9. More of an illegal immigrant or regular immigrant restrictions, rules, laws. (Tags, ID's, restrictions, etc)

I know this sounds werid and confusing, trust me, I'm just as confused, no one or website has been helpful in cracking what the heck these movie makers are up to, and what the campaign and these websites are for. Apparently Cloverfield had the same attention and set-up as District 9...hmmm

I will keep you uptated if I can gather more info and crack this secret. This may be a very very big movie for Hollywood. It will be Blomkamp's first large film ever. I am a fan of really good movies (director, acting, camera technique, moral issues, etc) and I am expecting this to be unlike any movie made yet, new, fresh, exciting, perhaps even philosophically challenging. Morality, and other aspects of life seem to be involved (and have been involved in almost every short film Blomkamp has made). Most particualry seen in Tetra Vaal and tempbot (which deal with Transhumanism, robotics, A.I. etc)

There is a list on this Wikipedia site of all his works, then just type the names into youtube and enjoy. These are something else and deffinetly worth your time.

No further news has been provided on this film. I believe it will be the catalyst for the creation of the HALO movie. I assume that both Peter Jackson and Neil Blomkamp will not only create District 9, but with together produce and direct Halo.

August 14th 2009 is still believe to be the scheduled release date.
