Mega Man Anniversary Collection gets a graphical "boost"
Tag: General Video Game DiscussionTo simulate this graphic "improvement" soon to be showcased in the once great collection, take a screenshot from one of your favorite games, open it in Photoshop, and double the image size. Oooo. Fuzzy. If you don't have Photoshop or you don't have a favorite game, just imagine this occuring in your mind through the power of imagination.
Or just look here.
Then look here.
Could such a practice be legally considered an "improvement" in a court of law?
More importantly, will this cause you or your loved ones to pause before hurrying out to purchase this collection?
Or do you actually like the idea?
It's gonna be released tomorrow!?!?! Thanx for the reminder!!!
I don't mind. Game's still the same.

Really the only thing stopping me from being at the store tomorrow is my broken Gamecube.
I'm still buying it.
It comes out tomorrow? I didn't see anything in the ads this week! WTF?
It warms my heart that so many people have such fondness for the little Blue Bomber. No thoughts on Interlaced 2D though?

Maybe they thought a fuzzy Mega Man would be more pleasant to hug...
It comes out thursday at Best Buy...not in the ad though...saw it online...it is out at gamestop and EB today, but the tax is too much at those stores and they don't have good discounts like a gift card or such.
From looking at those pics, I don't see interlacing. I see interpolating.

But you're absolutely right, it is Interpolation. No matter the name, it still looks worse now than the original graphics looked 15 years ago. How can this happen? Are they actually ashamed of these graphics and think they've covered their shame?
So now the graphics are bigger, brighter and have a little bit more detail, particularly in the background. What's the problem? It doesn't look that bad. All that matters is the gameplay.
And, since it's Mega Man, the music.

And, since it's Mega Man, the music. It's my fault, I posted the wrong pictures to illustrate my point. Those are from the arcade games. I was having a hard time finding un-interpolated images of the NES games. The NES games still have the same NES graphics, they have just been doubled in size and extra pixels are being added automatically between each of the pixels in an attempt to smooth the graphics out. In the end the image just looks fuzzy.
a better example
So no extra detail. And the detail that was already there is all fuzzy now.
If they had updated the graphics to look like the arcade game I would not only have no problem with it, I would actually be dancing in the street with a silly hat on my head singing baudy limerics. Instead this screams of a programmer's easy fix to "graphical inferiority."
I'm sure I'm in the minority, but I'm actually an artist myself and this quick graphic fix stuff bugs me to an end just within dangerous obsession.
I've got all of the 8 bit and 16-bit Mega Man games on emulators for my Dreamcast so I won't be needing to pick this up.
Great games though.

Because they are shrunk back to the original resolution. The game has line-doubling, that means the resolution was artificially upped to twice that size, which in and of its self wouldn't degrade the image any it's the interpolation that does it. The game has extra pixels added in between the original pixels that weren't there before to smooth the graphics. But since it is an automatic mathematical process and not done by an artist, the image just looks fuzzy, like the screenshots I linked to.
If you have the ZSNES emulator (I'm sure it's in others but I KNOW it's in this one) you can see it in action. There is an interpolation option in the video options if you run the emulator in any resolution from 640x480 up.

The image on the left is interpolated. The image on the right is not.
Note how the left image looks like a heavily compressed jpeg, while the image on the right is crisp.
If you can't see the difference then that is cool for you. Have fun playing the games. I know I will... but in the back of my mind I'll keep thinking to what could have been.
