Hot Discussion: Superhero Novels
Tag: Comic Book Discussion ForumAny thoughts as to why Superheroes or Mutants are reserved to comics? Has it just not been attempted enough? Would you read one?
As I've gotten older I still hold a dear spot in my heart for comics but have also found myself more driven to the mainstream-style of novels and story-telling. A marriage of my adolescence to the new (though not very improved) me seems like it would be bliss!
Boulevard books and Berkley put out a line of novels with the Marvel heroes not too long ago. I've read several and they are of varying quality. Some require knowledge of the story arc in the comic (Peter David's Hulk book What Rough Beast) and some don't. I collected several of them and they are good popcorn reads if you like the characters well enough. A link to one at Amazon and the "Customers also bought" section will guide you to the others:

DC did the same through Pocket Star with their JLA characters. I never read them but with writing talent like Roger Stern tapped to pen some of them, they should be decent. Link to the Superman story with excerpt:

Look around a bit more and you should find plenty of these out there now.
I really want to see more novels. In a way I hope for superhero/mutant novels to take the spot (or at least share the limelight) with fantasy novels. I mean, it's getting hard to find truly unique stories in the fantasy genre and this might be the bridge to revitalizing a flooded market.
I would think the novels would need to create a new cast of characters, deal with the inner struggles more deeply than usually happens in comics, have the interpersonal conflicts include more ethical decisions than we usually read in comics, and mix in more drama with the action than otherwise.
So, I've made the attempt at this myself. It's a mainstream approach to comicbook themes and characters and so far the digital reception is good. The Mutant Ranch series will end up 6-books long and examine many of the issues we're familiar with in comics.
