Hot Discussion: Taken (Liam Neeson) Review

If you ever are confronted with the choice of seeing a movie with an established actor taking on an interesting role, or a movie with a lot of flashy special effects, let me give you a little hint: pick the movie with the established actor every time. If there's one thing that high-tech CGI films have left modern audiences sorely wanting, it's that simple sense of human connection which really lends a story emotional weight. Once you reapply that missing ingredient, it's startling how thrilling a film can be.
"Taken" is a great example of a film that derives all of its punch from how much you empathize with the characters. The always great Liam Neeson plays Bryan, a divorced retiree who has recently moved back near his ex-wife's house so he can repair a fractured relationship with his seventeen year old daughter. Bryan is the type of guy who has some personality quirks. His manner of wrapping his daughter¡äs birthday present is a bit fanatical, but watching him do it lets the audience know that this is the type of guy who has overdeveloped his attention to detail (a trait that is to come in handy later in the film).
