#5 Super Mario Galaxy
vs.
#4 Dragon Quest VIII: Journey of the Cursed King

#5 Super Mario Galaxy revived Mario's downfall in the Next-Gen world have a critical disappointment debut on the Nintendo Gamecube. Super Mario Sunshine has its defenders out there, but universally it was seen as a step back for the Nintendo icon. Super Mario Galaxy took Mario back to the basics of what made it so popular in the first place: fun factor. The level designs were fresh and exciting, but it was really the whole new design of Mario's orbital limits that was visually intoxicating and unique. It was almost like reliving the days of playing Super Mario 64 for the first time.

#4 Dragon Quest VIII is one of the few lone RPG's left in the tournament (other than Chrono Trigger), so this is a desparate win for a fading genre on this board. However Dragon Quest VIII lives up to its hype as being a top-tier RPG not only with JRPG fans, but newcomers and casual gamers as well. If it can pull of a win here, it would set up a Sweet Sixteen rematch with Resident Evil 4.

You have 2 Days.

Dragon Quest. This one was easy.

Galaxy fo sho

I love both so much but it's gotta be Dragon Quest VIII.

Galaxy.

Easiest choice yet.

Super Mario Galaxy is one of my favorite games so far this gen but unfortunately I haven't played Dragon Quest VIII so I will abstain.

Meh...Galaxy was ok. DQ all the way.

DQVIII is an upper tier RPG and one of the last great console games to come from Square Enix. Super Mario Galaxy represents, in many ways, the logical extreme of the Wii experience: while fun, it is ultimately empty. Devoid of few, if any, challenges, the game mostly coasts on its aesthetically imaginative laurels, and is ultimately unsatisfying. It's also frustrating in the same regard, with a killer app concept and no meat to the experience.

Galaxy

Hell of a match-up...

Galaxy

I know what you're saying... "But Alf, you played through all of DQ8 with a thread, and jokes and everything!". That is true, but it came down to one simple thing for me. When I finished DQ8, I had no interest in continuing on. I didn't do any of the optional content (aside from the monster arena that I did during the game) while in SMG I immeadiatly rebooted the game after finishing it and started looking for every star.

I loved both, but the edge goes to Galaxy. Dragon Quest VIII was great, but the battle system was far too shallow for my taste. Galaxy took what worked from Super Mario 64 and built on it, creating some of the most fun and creative level designs I've ever seen.

Don't really care about either game much but will vote for DQ since SMB3, the superior Mario Bros. game, is up for a vote in the next round.

Really? I thought this match-up would be more talkative than this.

The current standings in the vote make me sad but they're still tied in my mind because Falion hasn't voted yet.

DQVIII was one of the very few RPG's I enjoyed but I still have to go with Galaxy.

One day I might take it upon myself to see what this DQVIII game is all about.

Until then.....I suppose I'm not voting in this thread? Galaxy is a fun game, but I don't really disagree with what Oz had to say, and it's plenty flawed to boot.

Galaxy by a country mile.

Don't get me wrong, I loved DQVIII and put around 80 hours into it by the end, but I just prefer more options when I'm spending that many hours in battles levelling up my characters.

Another criticism, while the music was wonderful, there wasn't enough of it for a game that long. I think there were only two battle themes, wasn't there, so how many dozens of hours did I spend listening to the same theme over and over again?

The Winner Is...

SUPER MARIO GALAXY
